The OCSB offers free English language classes for adults through two main programs: Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and English as a Second Language (ESL). These programs are designed to help adult learners improve their English skills for daily life, work, and academic purposes.
Classes are throughout the city of Ottawa at Ottawa Catholic School Board Adult Schools and community locations.

1. ESL – English as a Second Language
Flexible In-Person, Online & Hybrid Options for All Levels
The Continuing and Community Education Department offers Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in Ottawa to help you improve your English communication skills for everyday life, work, or further education. Our ESL program is available in in-person, online, and hybrid formats, making it easy to learn at your own pace and convenience.
Courses are available for all skill levels—from complete beginners to advanced English learners.
Our ESL classes focus on:
- Reading, writing, and grammar.
- Speaking, listening, and pronunciation.
- Workplace communication and computer skills.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test preparation.

2. LINC – Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada
English, Employment & Everyday Life
The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program helps newcomers adjust to life in Canada and participate in Canadian society as quickly as possible. Offered through our English, Employment & Everyday Life programs, LINC provides free English language training alongside essential skills to help you settle and find work.
Through the LINC program, you will gain:
- English language skills for speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
- Settlement and pre-employment training, including job search strategies and workplace communication.
- Practical information about living in Canada, including social norms, cultural values, and community services.
- Engaging activities like field trips, guest speakers, cultural events, and digital learning to help you connect with your community.
Whether you are preparing for your first job in Canada or looking to improve your English for daily life, the LINC program offers the tools and support you need to succeed.

* LINC CLB levels 5-7 classes will end on March 31, 2026, across Canada and at OCSB.

Due to high demand, some courses are at capacity, and students may be put on a waiting list.
We encourage you to contact your local school or email our team for guidance on registration and availability. Once your spot is confirmed, you will receive a “Welcome email” or a phone call with the next steps.

Please Note
- All courses are subject to availability and enrollment and may have waiting lists. The proposed schedule and locations are subject to change based on funding and other government directions.
- Classes will include online components, and learners should be prepared to participate in online sessions or complete online assignments.
- Learners are required to attend each class and participate in class activities. Failure to do this may mean removal from the program.
